Break a Leg to the Nominees: Offies 2025 Celebration
Cheers to Exceptional Theatre – Especially the Amazing Puppet Teams!
The OffWestEnd Awards (Offies) are back, and they’re ready to celebrate the best independent theatre beyond London's glittering West End. From immersive experiences to awe-inspiring puppet productions, this year's nominations are a testament to the creativity, diversity, and innovation that define the vibrant independent theatre scene. Here's to all the nominees, particularly the puppet teams! May you break a leg tonight!
The Offies has long been a crucial part of recognising hidden gems of theatre. The process of selection is no small feat—assessing nearly 600 productions from over 115 venues, they truly cover a vast array of performances. With its new Areas of Exceptional Contribution model, the Offies now offers an even broader and more inclusive recognition of theatrical excellence across various fields like Design, Performance, Music, Creation, and Innovation.
The puppetry teams—whose work in shows like Captain Sandy and the Sea Monster (Puppet Theatre Barge), Boxville, A Cardboard Adventures Production with Sam Wilde and Ian Nicholson, Olive Hymans and the Little Angel Theatre Rosie Robin, Michela Murphy, Darcey O’Rourke, Felicity Sparks / The Littlest Yak (Polka Theatre) —have been the heart and soul of the arts community, showing the world the power of storytelling through intricate and moving designs.
Celebrating Outstanding Nominees
From stellar performances to ground-breaking designs, 2025's Offies include incredible shows and creatives:
Creation Finalists include Maddie Dai for Captain Sandy and the Sea Monster, showing that puppetry is taking the stage by storm.
Design Finalists such as Sam Wilde for Boxville bring a new level of detail and imagination to the art.
And in Performance, standouts like Michela Murphy, Darcey O’Rourke, Felicity Sparks, The Littlest Yak (Polka Theatre)
The Offies' decision to revamp the awards structure, removing rigid categories and introducing broader "Areas of Exceptional Contribution," allows for a more inclusive and flexible celebration of theatre. The puppet teams, for example, have long been marginalized in traditional awards formats, but now they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all the other major categories.
